Resumo: The aim of this study is to analyze the evolution of tourism in Northeast Brazil, with emphasis on expansion of hotels from 1980 to 2000. The physical area of research included Recife, the capital, and the southern coast of Pernambuco, Brazil, in what was then called Project Gold Coast after the Tourism Development Program in the Northeast (PRODETUR/ NE?I). Information was collected through primary and secondary sources and through interviews. Among the results, it is highlighted the following: in Pernambuco, the incorrect choice of the area caused the failure of the Project. In contrast, the hospitality industry from the beach of Porto de Galinhas has experienced significant growth. The dissemination and facilitation of tourist charter flights allowed to turn it into an international beach destination.
