Resumo: Tourism is often pointed out as a strategic sector for developing territories. For that matter, public policies are crucial, and the organisations that share responsibilities in tourism play a fundamental role in planning, financing and encouraging communities’ development through tourism. Alto Alentejo is a peripheral region that suffers from several constraints to its development. It is imperative to reflect on the role of tourism in the development of this territory and analyse the impact that the recent pandemic had on the sector during the so-called first wave. This article aims to evaluate the pandemic's impact on the tourism businesses in Alto Alentejo and the public authorities' existing responses to mitigate the consequences of the current situation, using official data and documents complemented with an exploratory study.
