Resumo: The Bom Jesus Island located inside the Guanabara Bay (RJ) has a rich historical heritage that goes through different moments of the history of Brazil. This paper seeks to highlight the importance of this space for the construction of memory and national identity, using as a basis of analysis for the conclusions, the research projects: 'Preservation of the memory of the Asilo dos Inválidos da Pátria (AIP) and the historical site of the Bom Jesus Island: a tribute to the heroes and martyrs of Brazil' and 'Memory, heritage and environment, in the context of the historical site of the Island of Bom Jesus', developed by the Army Center for Studies and Research in Military History (CEPHiMEx), in the years 2019/2020, which sought, from the research on the homeland invalids asylum and the military museum, which were located there, highlight the importance of the site as a historical heritage to be preserved, but which would also serve as a space for the articulation of differentiated knowledge, material and immaterial, in the area of heritage education and environmental education.
