Resumo: Family businesses represent a significant part of the business fabric and are extremely important for the economy and development of countries. However, these companies face several challenges, namely in the succession process in which entrepreneurial skills play an important role. Thus, the aim of this article is to identify the key entrepreneurial competences present in the succession process of Portuguese family businesses in the handicraft and agrotourism sectors. To carry out the study we opted for a qualitative approach, the technique for obtaining data was through semi-structured personal interviews with senior elements (predecessor generation) and juniors (successor generation) of these companies. The results allowed the identification of different succession processes as well as different ways of acquiring entrepreneurial competences, and consequently, different degrees of development of this type of competences in the predecessor and successor generations. In addition, it was found that in both generations, the relationship with the market emerges as one of the fundamental entrepreneurial competences for success.
