Resumo: In this investigation we intend to typify the institutional environment in the field of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in which three, four and five star hotels located in the Northern Region of Portugal operate.  To do so, we have used the institutional theory which is based on three pillars; coercive, normative and cognitive (Scot, 1995). Our goal is to find out which of the institutional pressures coercive, normative or mimetic (Deephouse, 1996) has greater influence in this context.  A quantitative study was carried out using questions based on validated scales (Deephouse, 1996; Fernandez, 2001; Kostova & Roth, 2002; Llamas, 2005; Riquel, 2010, Gallardo-Vázquez & Sanchez-Hernández, 2012). A factorial analysis was performed to identify the intensity each pressure of institutional theory has.  Scale unidimensionality tests were run in order to carry out the factorial analysis on the constructs which make up the investigation model.  By means of this methodology, we were able to reduce the information contained in a set of original variables to a set of less variables with minimal loss of information (Bartlett, 1951; Kaiser, 1970; Nunnally, 1978; Wubneh, 1987; Verdú, 2002; Aymerich & Meseguer, 2004; Perez, 2005; Wang, 2005). As a main result of this investigation, coercive pressure stands out as the most influential in the institutional context of the Northern Region of Portugal.
