Resumo: Communicating science, in particular geosciences, plays a key role in geoconservation and tourism strategies in UNESCO World Geoparks. Geoparks correspond to geographical areas of international importance, recognized by UNESCO, as a result of their relevant geological heritage and their natural and cultural diversity. These territories play an important role in the conservation and promotion of geodiversity, as well as for the development of sustainable tourism activities. The effective communication of science in Geoparks is crucial, in the enhancement and protection of geological and ecocultural resources, to involve different audiences, from tourists to local communities in the knowledge and interpretation of the heritage values held. The UNESCO Portuguese World Geoparks have been playing a strategic role in enhancing and affirming territories of significant natural value, providing projects and initiatives to promote the geosciences and foster tourism, which bring international recognition and contribute to the social and economic well-being of their communities. This study seeks to identify the main strategies, means and actions promoted by geoparks in the promotion of geosciences, the development of geoconservation actions and the promotion of sustainable tourism practices.
