Resumo: Tourism development in Spain has undergone a significant transformation, adapting to the changing needs of travellers. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted negatively with travel restrictions, paralyzing tourism activity in the years 2020 and 2021. This research focuses on analysing the impact on tourism in rural areas of low population density, as is the case of Extremadura. A study is carried out at the municipal level, using data from the occupancy surveys of the National Institute of Statistics, to check whether the COVID pandemic has been an opportunity to relaunch these places from the tourism sector. New methodologies are used to analyse data on both supply and demand at the municipal level. In this way, we have compared the numbers of places offered and travellers received before and after the pandemic, seeking to understand the variations in tourism activity in the municipalities of Extremadura. Among the results obtained, it can be seen that, in this study area, the tourism sector has recovered the figures achieved prior to the pandemic, and in some areas, it has even improved its tourism potential.
