Resumo: The socio-environmental practices generated by local communities play an important role since the management and conservation of the natural elements that surround them may depend on them. A biological conservation strategy that has been promoted in some regions of Mexico is ecotourism. However, little is still known about how communities' own socio-environmental practices influence biological conservation through ecotourism. The objective was to identify the local ecotourism practices that determine the current environmental management of the Arcotete, Grutas del Mamut and Grutas de Rancho Nuevo ecotourism parks of the municipality of San Cristóbal de Las Casas (SCLC), Chiapas and their relationship with the conservation status. of the mountain forest. Semi-structured interviews made up of thematic blocks were carried out with people from the boards of directors and operational staff of each ecotourism park, as they were the group of people directly related to the management of the park. In addition, non-participatory observation, review of published documents and photographs were carried out that allowed us to assess the congruence of the information from the interviews with the actions within each park. It was observed that ecotourism was integrated into the rules, norms and forms of ejidal organization and those of a Cooperative Society. Likewise, there was a change in the way the territory was managed, from agricultural practices to the provision of ecotourism services. Based on their environmental conceptions they have developed new practices that help the forests continue.
