Resumo: Recent studies have observed the irresponsible exploitation of natural resources by the inhabitants of rural communities in their desire to improve their economic situation. This article reports on a training programme in ecotourism and environmental engagement involving students from Ricardo Palma High School in Rica Playa, San Jacinto (Tumbes). In order to assess the effectiveness of the programme, students were tested before and after the experience to assess their level of knowledge about ecotourism, their identity and their engagement with environmental conservation. The study used a quantitative pre-experimental research design consisting of a questionnaire applied to a sample population of 30 students. The results showed that the training programme did influence the identity and engagement of the students who participated. By way of conclusion, the study recommends that the authorities promote training projects for the conservation of existing natural and cultural tourist areas and resources in the Tumbes region, and that students become more engaged in the conservation and restoration of natural and cultural areas.
