Resumo: The aim of this article is to identify the resources and attractions found in of the small town of Paderne in the province of A Coruña, in order to assess the potential for the development and diversification of tourism in this area. The study used a qualitative methodology consisting of interviews and observation, together with SWOT and CAME analyses. The birth rate in Paderne is low, as it is in many rural areas of Galicia where the population has been hit by out-migration, and commercial life in the area is limited to a few small family-owned businesses and self-employed operators. Paderne has a fledgling tourism sector centred on companies selling quality local produce, environmentally sustainable rural accommodation, and a number of different tourism enterprises controlled by local companies and individuals. Paderne is part of the Mariñas Coruñesas and Mandeo Biosphere Reserve initiative for the promotion of cooperation and mutual benefit between local councils.
