Resumo: This article explores the relationship between tourism and poverty alleviation in poor regions in the context of sustainable human development, using for this purpose the case of Cuzco, the most important tourist destination in the Southern Peruvian Andes and, one of the poorest and vulnerable regions, particularly in the mountainous rural areas. Based on statistical data available from official sources and unpublished studies of the Observatorio Turístico del Perú, I analyse tourism activity in the context of poverty and its socio-economic impact. Finally, the findings suggest that the tourism development reproduces socioeconomic inequalities among the regional population.
