Resumo: Despite women are a very relevant collective for the Tourism sector in Spain, as they nourish in higher percentage than men both professional and academic fields, they keep on being under-represented in positions of responsibility in the academic and scientific areas. The purpose of this work is to analyze the percentage of women’s participation in those two aspects of tourist sector at a national level with the aim of elucidating the causes. Derivative of these empirical data it is concluded that it is necessary a greater commitment to education, research and innovation in the field of tourism as a competitive tool to overcome the economic crisis, considering criteria of social responsibility and effective gender equality, and purposing strategic steps to achieve that goal.
