Resumo: This article begins with a discussion of the concept of tourism in general and cultural tourism in particular within the context of sustainable development. It then moves on to discuss the key issues relating to the phenomenon of pilgrimages, the reasons for pilgrimages and the functions they serve. It goes on to draw parallels between cultural tourism and the pilgrimage to Compostela, and this involves defining the type of visitors and their motivation for visiting, while also analysing the consumption of products and symbols by the tourists and pilgrims. Lastly, it reflects on the opportunities for socioeconomic development that all of this brings.
