Resumo: This article examines both the sustainable tourism ‘definition and pertinent criteria included in the debate surrounding this concept. It addresses the need to incorporate other analysis variables to consider sustainability as a system in a tourism destination. The discussion, therefore, revolves around the conceptual inadequacy that has existed evaluating the four main factors that define sustainability in a destiny according to the literature; with an emphasis on meeting the needs of the local community as a relevant indicator for evaluation. With this purpose, the concept of Socio-Territorial Capacities is presented; it is understood as a tool for sustainability management in tourist destinations.
