Resumo: The article makes a review of sustainable development as a paradigm to guide the tourist dynamics in coastal destinations, raising the need to make local evaluations. Mazatlan, Mexico is analyzed with indicators for economic, social, cultural, environmental and governance aspects, in order to identify how close a sustainable tourism is. The results point to the rethinking of the tourism model in this and other Mexican destinations, considering that to continue with it, the social and environmental costs will far exceed the economic benefits.
