Resumo: Tourist development generated great expectations for growth in many rural areas. The European Union promoted development through programmes of public grants. Many rural areas in Spain, and specifically in the Comunitat Valenciana, took advantage of these grants. Two decades after this initial period of government support, it is fitting to determine to what extent expectations have been met, how the sector has developed within the rural environment and what future possibilities exist. The research conducted has shown that rural tourism is facing a change of cycle. More coordinated planning, greater professionalization, better structuring of the products and improvement in marketing systems are some of the actions necessary to guarantee the future of rural tourism.
