Resumo: This paper presents, from an emic perspective, the social benefits and costs as perceived by local residents in Bays of Huatulco, one of the most important tourism destinations in Mexico. Based on qualitative research techniques, the study revealed that the economic contribution to the local community and the supply of job opportunities are positively perceived by the interviewees. On the other hand, the research showed that litter on the streets and beaches is perceived as one of the most important costs at a community level.
