Resumo: After a critical review of the academic debate on the significance of residential tourism, we ask the following question: how is second-home tourism development defined and valued by the inhabitants of the towns where it takes place? We answer this question from a qualitative analysis of the discourses produced by the major stakeholders involved in the dynamics of this process in the host societies. Forty-five in-depth interviews have been compiled of those involved directly (hotel, travel agencies and property developers), indirectly (trade union representatives, associations of traders, directors of banks) and administration (councillors and tourist office staff). As well, we present some information from two focus groups as an approach to the discourse of the citizens. The scope of the investigation is the southern coast of the province of Alicante where residential tourism has been recognised as the dominant tourism typology compared to other models of development. The dominant discourse tendency is closer to legitimation of the residential tourism than to resistant. The stakeholder’s definition doesn’t argue the tourist nature of this development.
