Resumo: Beaches are one of the most important environmental assets regarding coastal resources. Being the main factor for tourism demand in many countries, they are, moreover, the basis of a great biological variety and an effective way of protecting coastal zones. The article analyses not only the characteristics of coastal resources, but also how useful integrated coastal management could be for the sustainable development of economic activities such as tourism. New methods and practices observed in management, which are oriented to customer satisfaction, and its application to the social and economic profitability of coastal areas are discussed. This new perspective requires the assumption of a new management structure, and justifies changes in the way we consider beaches.
