Resumo: The purpose of this article is to analyze the importance of territory in building tourism destinations competitiveness in new regional development environment.
Within this context, knowledge and innovation are considered to be decisive factors of competitiveness, both at enterprises and territorial levels. The role of tourism as spatial patterns developer is discussed, then reflecting local, regional and national identities by contradiction between space of places and space of networks. Thus, territory acquires the performance of «versatile integrator», ably links cultures of local societies with changes in the global economic context.
Finally social, economic and territory dimensions of competitiveness of tourist destinations are analyzed, doing emphasis on distributive opportunities that tourism outline and reviewing the role of Regional Public Universities to achieve them.
