Resumo: From the selection of twelve rural properties located at the so called Fourth Colony of Italian Colonization region in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, we developed the present work that aimed at seeing the potential of these farms and verifying the owner’s interest and knowledge about the possibility of implementing the rural tourism diversifying activities. The criteria adopted to select the properties was maximum area, financial return from the activities developed in the farm and, the presence of two generations of farmers. Three instruments, two structured and one with open questions were applied during the study. The results show the farms potentialities, the farmers’ interest in improving their income but it also highlighted the fear and concern of the elderly in dealing with the public.
