Resumo: Considered as a fundamental issue to the practice of a sustainable tourism, interpretation can be presented as a solution to many problems and conflicts deriving from the tourism activity by combining the interests of the visitor with those of the territories, resources and local community. Under this assumption it is important to understand how interpretation can assist attractions and tourist destinations to achieve sustainability. In way to know the state of the art of sustainability applied to tourism and to identify the dimensions which have been attributed to it, a review of literature published in the last two decades was undertaken. Regarding to the economic dimension in particular, it is clear, from this exploratory and conceptual approach, that the relationship between interpretation and economic sustainability is still a very poorly explored field of study.
