Resumo: The Archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, located 545 km far from Recife (capital of Pernambuco), has the tourism as its main economic activity, with arrivals exceeding the number of 50.000 tourists a year. As a group of islands, however, Fernando de Noronha has particularities related to its insular environment. One of them is the lack of perennial hydrographic basins, which brings problems of water resources availability. This situation is, though, aggravated in the high season periods, with the elevation of the number of tourists in the island. Therefore, the water supply system is a main issue to be considered in order to keep the sustainability of the tourism activity in Fernando de Noronha. The purpose of this essay is to discuss the relationships between tourism and water resources of the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, from the general characterization of water consumption by the guest-houses in the island by selecting 35 hotel establishments as sample of this research. The analysis was based in quotes of water consumption of the guest-houses (consume per month and per year) related to the years of 2003 and 2004, information collected from the state company responsible for the sanitation of the island (COMPESA – Companhia Pernambucana de Saneamento).
