This article offers some insights into the relationship between tourism and cultural place of memory, focusing on analysis of the barracks of bumba-meu-boi in São Luís, Maranhão. We used a literature search and field work in order to reflect on the opportunities and challenges in the transformation of shacks bumba-meu-boi in places of tourist visitation. It was found that the shacks, as support for the expression of the bumba-meu-boi, can contribute to the enrichment of the relationship between tourists and shareholders through balanced planning of the cultural offer, based on the assumptions of sustainability.
