Resumo: Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, safety and security issues, especially in tourism, have become notorious worldwide. However, in addition to issues related to terrorism, security concerns also involve aspects relatedto risk and crime, as well as personal / individual aspects, such as diseases, risk behaviors related to drug and alcohol consumption, unprotected sex with strangers, among others. The research’s main objective is to identify the importance of security-related topics in the education and training of tourism professionals. For that purpose 109 questionnaires were administrated to tourism specialists in the field of education, such as head professors, lecturers and researchers. Additionally, this research analyzed tourism courses in Portugal, to verify if security is considered a relevant topic for students’ learning and how it is approached.
