Resumo: This paper condenses the main findings of an exploratory study on the perceptions of visitors of a dark tourism attraction in Portugal. The empirical research that has been carried out was based on a theoretical reflection on the concept of dark tourism and its role as a mediator of death and suffering in contemporary Western society. The understanding of how visitors of an attraction related to death and suffering represent it was amongst the objectives of this research. By using interviews subjected to a process of content analysis, it was possible to identify visitors’ characteristics that may influence this representation.
