Resumo: The article describes the opening of the first hotels of Lisbon in the XIX century, analysis their insertion in the urban fabric as a consequence or the urban policies, explains the reasons that led to their localization and analysis their guests’ lifestyles. The case study is based on a large and varied number of documental sources concerning Cultural Studies, Urban Sociology, Urbanism, Architecture, Local History and Literature.
