Resumo: This work, guided by assumptions of the geographical thinking, aims to reflect about the possibility of working the concept of sustainable development in the perspective of tourism in the coastal space. It will discuss the tourism expanding process in the coast and its implications, since this is a contemporary activity, which is perceived as a consumer of space and it is tied to the capital. For this study it was used, as methodology, a qualitative analysis. Bibliographic and documental review was conducted in order to establish a theoretical framework and perform a reflection about the use of the concept of sustainable development and how it can be applied in tourism. This analysis tries to identify alternatives for the development of the touristic activity so that it can benefit social subjects involved in this practice and enhance their understanding of all process. Therefore, we present a study on the communitarian tourism in Prainha do Canto Verde/Beberibe – CE as a possible alternative to tourism development.
