Resumo: The Region of Tourism of Serra da Estrela (RTSE) endowed with odd landscape conditions, of only natural resources, full of culture and history, became a region of leisure and very appreciated recreation. Seeing the important strategic role that the hotel activity withholds in the region and verified the scarcity of monitoring studies of activity´s development, it aims at the present inquiry to contribute to know the reality of the hotels for tourism´s interest RTSE. Thus, it is intended to analyze the types of strategies that are to be adopted in the region, for this type of companies, and to identify the existence of strategic groups. An empirical study was developed in order to reach such, having as basis the gotten information of the statistical analyses of the inquiries carried out to the directors of the hotel establishments for the tourism interest RTSE. The realized analyses allowed to conclude that the hotels follow agreed strategies and also detect the existence of different strategic groups, in which use similar competitive strategies. From this process it also resulted, that the companies that belonged to the hotel sector like companies of other sectors, consider that the strategy assumes an important role for the success of its activity.
