Resumo: This article intends to demonstrate that the Portuguese emigrants, while potential tourist promoters, will be able to contribute to stimulate the initial stages of the economic development of the rural areas in Portugal. This estimated is valid if we consider some studies carried in developing countries and rural areas, disclosers that touristic expenditures create more employment and income than any other economic setor, due to its multiplier effect and its linking to almost all the other industries of the economy. On the other hand, the preliminary results of a carried recent study to Portuguese emigrants corroborate part of that argument when considering its age, graduation and economic capital, obtained during the emigration, as well as the possibility to intend to return, to invest in a business and to have a job in the tourism area, in its place of origin, Portugal.
