Resumo: Tourism is an economic and social phenomenon, with major impact in our days. Since ever, tourists try to use their free time in exploring and enjoying different environments both in biophysical and sociocultural terms. In this way we can consider that tourism and environment has been always connected. However, as a reflex of social evolution in what concerns environmental issues, tourists become more and more demanding in terms of the environmental quality of the tourism offer. The interaction between tourism, as economic activity, environment and sustainable development becomes a focal issue in what concerns research development. In this paper we focus in the analysis of that interaction evolution, giving special attention to the development of alternative tourism products and activities, namely in wetland areas as Ria de Aveiro.
