Resumo: This article analyzes public goods in tourist destinations. Its importance in the tourist destination allows us to conclude that public goods may be considered decisive for competitiveness. However, the character of public goods implies that market forces will tend to undersupply them. The Valuation methods presented in the paper assign a mone-tary value to the preferences of individuals for the public goods. The paper considers both economic efficiency and the relevance of the monetary values assigned to public goods in order to enhance competitiveness. Finally, the consumer surplus for European outbound tourism to Portugal using the travel costs method is estimated. The results show an increase in the consumer surplus caused by the Riots in some Arab countries.
