Resumo: The necessity to attain sustainable rural development which implies respect to environment, culture and local traditions, demands from public administrations and private companies a stimulation of activities parallel and complementary to the traditional ones of rural areas. In this paper we present the results of a study on the introduction of wine tourism activity in a geographical area (Montilla-Moriles in the county of Córdoba, Spain). Firstly, we revise the academic literature in the field of wine tourism. Then, we carry out a socioeconomic analysis of the geographical area mentioned above. After that, we present the methodology of the econometric model, which is based on the tourist offer and demand, having done the fieldwork in the second quarter of 2006. Finally, and together with the results, we also present possible lines of investigation.
