Resumo: This article analyses the supply chain management concept associated to the tourism and investigates the possibility of using communitarian tourism as a way to embed sustainability principles in this activity. For the theoretical analysis, the tourism system approach was adopted, since it systematizes the tourism supply chain. In order to demonstrate the concept, the case of Prainha do Canto Verde, in the state of Ceará, Northeastern Brazil is presented. The example shows that the communitarian tourism model is a viable way to adopt sustainability parameters along the tourism supply chain. That is because it develops social, environmental, and economic factors in such a way that the local population becomes responsible for all the phases of the supply chain, as well as for the decision making process. This situation guarantees the minimization of the environmental and social impacts and ensures total access by the population to the benefits generated by the tourism.
