Resumo: This study analyses, in a comparative way, the reality of higher education in tourism and its offer in Brazil and in Portugal. In this context, it was intended to understand its evolution and the current reality in order to point out somefuture scenarios and common challenges that, eventually, could be develop in both countries with respect to the modalities of higher education in tourism. Particular attention was given to the formative offer in polytechnic education system. A strong expansion of this offer in higher education was observed, which primary purpose is to meet the training needs and consequent qualification of professionals in this sector. This also represents a challenge for educational institutions as these needs often pervade the labour market. However, the role of polytechnic education should be highlighted, namely due to the offer of a vocationally-oriented curriculum that meets the needs of training and technological qualification in tourism, particularly in emerging economies.
