Resumo: Tourist motivations are essential not only for the tourist decision process but also in the building of the holiday destination image (Correia and Crouch, 2003). During the last decades, the national tourist account showed a positive balance and few Portuguese citizens would make holidays abroad or even in Portugal. In order to increase the study of the exit flows, the current study presents the main results from the application of a set of multivariate statistical methods with the purpose of characterizing the tourist demand of Master students from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Algarve. The performed analyses had evidenced three factors in what concerns the choice of a tourist destination as well as three groups of tourists which have different motivations for going on holiday.
