Resumo: Island destinations, because of their environment, their relative isolation and the traditional culture of its inhabitants, may be considered ideal places to meet tourist flows fleeing from mass tourism. Therefore, the development of a Community-Based tourism has special relevance today. This kind of tourism should be based on tourism planning grounded in an agreement supported by the community in the area in order that people are not only participating in decision making but also benefiting from the positive effects of tourism. The aim of this paper is to analyze the tourism situation, from the demand point of view, in the island of Boavista in Cape Verde (Africa), which is in an initial phase of take off and development, and where the main influx of tourists goes to major tourist resorts with all-included packages. The results show that Boavista has a huge potential to develop a sun-and-beach, Community-Based, and sustainable tourism.
