Resumo: The local development of Brazilian municipalities is usually differentiated by specific components of each region. Due to the proximity of the municipalities of Camboriú and the Beach Resort Camboriú, the present paper aims at analyzing the development of these municipalities by comparing their social, economic, and infrastructure aspects which justify the present contrasting situation. The source for information were the surveys performed through the data sources available by electronic means, data management, both national and international, such as the Brazilian Geographic and Statistical Institute, the Brazilian Service for Supporting Micro and Small Companies, and the United Nations Program for Development. The main results identified that the distance between these two municipalities is inversely proportional to the development of each one of them. In spite of their being separated by only one highway, BR101, the indices related to the development of each municipality are quite odd. Some motives that may justify such disparity are the real estate speculation of Beach Resort Camboriú, high values of GNP (gross national product), and a larger index of schooling, thus making this municipality n.7 in rank in the Brazilian HDI (human development index), counterpointing the municipality of Camboriú which is n. 1478 in that rank.
