Resumo: The main purpose of this paper is to studythe relationship between tourist demand andcriminality. This relationship is suggested bythe review of literature, which points towards aconsistent proximity between both. Mainly froma theoretical, psychological and sociological pointof view, the review of the literature allows for awider understanding of issues that relate to tourists’victimization, which are the basis for causes andconsequences of crime in tourist destinations. The theoretical understanding of this phenomenonlead to the construction of a questionnaire, which isto be applied to national and international touriststhat have been victims of a crime and who reportedit at an Algarve Police Station. This study will beconducted by the University of the Algarve (Schoolof Management, Hospitality and Tourism) and bythe regional section of the Police Force in Faro, during a six month period. The results will enablea further, more objective analysis of the relationbetween tourism and crime, and a comparison withthe results from other tourist destinations.
