Resumo: The group of symbolic processes that are highlighted by cultural tourism is in the pursuit of retrieving tangible and intangible heritage of a territory, these as a fundamental asset for the constitution of identity and the strengthening of the social tissue with the construction and promotion of products that rescue history and memory. In this research, an analysis of the potential of Girardot`s rail road history is developed for the enrichment of the cultural area in tourism, given that this heritage has not been taken on account as an element of the positioning and tourism competivity at regional and national levels, because of that, a contribution from the relation between history, memory and tourism is made as well as the events that defined the rail road history of the municipality thus generating a proposal of sustainable cultural tourism acording to the tendencies of the current tourist.
