Resumo: This text, presents in a schematic way, the main interpretative theories that have influenced tourism studies, with the intention to be useful for scholars and students of tourism themes interested in addressing the meanings collectively produced as their central object of interest. Seven theoretical proposals of importance in the social sciences are synthesized: symbolic interactionism, social phenomenology, the dramaturgical approach to social representation ethnomethodology, the actor-network theory and the theory of strategic action fields; their epistemological foundations, their main concepts and a selection of works applied to the field of tourism is shown. Based on them, the possibility is raised that they may be used by future researchers to deepen and broaden the knowledge of tourism, especially that in which the production and interpretation of meanings constitutes its object of main interest.
