Resumo: This paper examines the territorial dimension of tourism in Chiquitania, an isolated region in east Bolivia. Being sparsely populated, lacking significant physical infrastructure and offering limited services to the local population and visitors alike, this area is far from having adequate conditions for the promotion of tourism at both national and international levels. Still, the cultural heritage in Chiquitania is singular, ascribed to the missions built at the time of the Jesuitical presence in the area, and nowadays promoted for tourism purposes. By carrying out field-work, onsite interviews, internet questionnaires and generating new cartography, this research manages to reveal the existence of seven mission towns to where a small number of tourists travel, from afar, wanting to experience the thrills of this special interest tourism in a very remote location.
