Resumo: The distinctive characteristics of the so-called ‘Sea Glass Beach’ (Praia dos cristais) in Laxe (A Coruña) have made it a popular tourist attraction in the area. Its growing popularity has put the continued existence of the beach at risk, however, as a result of visitors taking glass home with them. The answer to this problem is sustainable tourism. The main aim of this study is to examine and assess the defining features of tourist activity at the Sea Glass Beach, in order to identify the factors threatening its survival. The analysis focuses on the following variables: a) motivations of tourists who visit the beach; b) current tourist perceptions of the beach; c) impact of globalisation and social media on the type of visitors to the beach and the type of tourism they practise, and d) possible definition of the Sea Glass Beach as a new tourism product. The article concludes by highlighting the current lack of information regarding the problem and recommending a model of sustainable tourism based on the findings of the study.
