Writer, university professor, journalist, literary critic, politician, Urbano Tavares Rodrigues (1923-2013), with more than fifty years of literary life, was an indefatigable traveler in Europe, USA, Africa or Asia. Although this rich facet of a cultured traveler, of trotamundos, for professional or simply “touristic” reasons is ignored and even forgotten, it is this facet we intend to address with our communication.
His travels, expressed in notes that record all this dust from multiple years of wandering around the world, around [himself] and meeting the other, privileged places like England and the USA. In this way, some of their chronicles and travel notes, gathered in the works Journeys in Europe and From Florence to New York, alluding to those two countries, written in the fifties and sixties of the last century, were analyzed. Although they are, according to the author, notes thrown on paper with verbal abundance, the eagerness of expression of the first impulse, they nevertheless reflect the author's high stylistic level, his profound ability to analyze the surrounding reality and, above all, they surprise by the timeliness of some of their descriptions and reflections. So, the aim of this communication is to provide the literary and cultural contents, in order to do these itineraries.
In this research, we opted for a qualitative approach. We also partially follow the typology of Fernando Cristo´va~o (2009), since it seemed to us to be able to include the corpus of 'chronicles' and 'notes' that we choose, as an object of analysis, between two types: cultural journeys and journeys of great journalistic reporting.
