Resumo: Arequipa is one of the most important tourist destinations in Southern Peruvian Andes. The city of Arequipa, capital of this region, has an important architectural heritage from colonial times comprised by churches, convents and other beautiful buildings, such as the Cathedral and Santa Catalina Convent. The impressive Colca Valley with its famous Colca canyon is the most popular tourist destination in the region, with rural towns and colonial architecture enriching the touristic landscape of Arequipa.
The aim of this article is to analyse Arequipa region in the context of tourism growth as well as the contribution of the latter to its sustainable development. Based on official statistical data and secondary sources, we introduce the tourism activity in the region and its socioeconomic impact.Finally, revised data raise evidence of the most characteristic features of the regional tourism model.
